What My 9 to 5 Job Taught Me About Personal Development

Jeez… It seemed like 2019 was the year of bashing 9-5 work. As if being an entrepreneur makes you harder working or more disciplined person than someone in a traditional career.

That really disappoints me to hear. And I can tell you first-hand that working 9-5 is a job like any other – it is up to you to make it as challenging or as career-limiting as you want. One of the most beneficial things that I learned working a 9-5 was 10-10-10 formula. And that is exactly what I am sharing with you today.

So What is the 10-10-10?

So in my corporate job, every 2 weeks, I (as the employee), would sit down with my immediate supervisor and have a one-on-one meeting as known as a bilat. One of the formats of the bilats was known as the 10-10-10. It worked like this:
-10 minutes to discuss what I’ve been doing in my job over the past two weeks
-10 minutes to discuss expectations of my manager
-10 minutes to discuss my personal goals and goals in the company

Going through this information was a great way to (1) reflect on my work (2) have my work critiqued, and (3) make sure I was working toward my goals.
So then how can we apply this 10-10-10 formula to our personal development?

Firstly, we need to decide if we have a mentor we can do this exercise with.

Maybe you already have a mentor in your life or at least someone who you discuss your goals with. If you don’t have a mentor in your life, do you have a close friend you can do this with. It should be someone who you comfortable sharing personal information and goals with. I’d actually encourage you two do this exercise with at least 2 people, whether that be 2 good friends, or a mentor and a friend. This way you’ll be able to compare and contrast the information from both individuals.

If you want to know more about picking a person to do this exercise with, try to find at least two people who are credible and or trustworthy. Not everyone will have both qualities so it’s important to know the difference. The importance of finding someone credible and trustworthy

Once you pick this friend, I recommend sending them this post as it will help them respond to your situation with empathy. And by “empathy” I mean they will be able to critique you based on what they would do if they were you NOT if they themselves were in that given scenario.

Set up a Meeting

Once you find that person to do this exercise with, set up a meeting with them. Feel free to make it as casual or as professional as you’d like – so that means you can meet at a coffee shop, over dinner, at the library, or even at your place.

Set the intention for the meeting by filling out the 10-10-10 template and giving it to your friend to prepare them for the meeting.

Remember they are going to be critiquing you, so you want to give them some time to review what you want to discuss.

As you fill out your goals in the first part of the template, I also suggest you stick to 1 goal only. I think people have a tendency of spreading ourselves too thin when it comes to personal development; we exert so much mental energy trying to become a master of many instead of focusing our energy into 1 goal. Trying to achieve too many goals at one time can result in quitting on goals, burning out, or not achieving goals at all.

So let’s dive into the 10-10-10 template

Now… I do want to mention that the 10 minute sections are simply guidelines. They are in place to keep your discussion concise. And in the corporate world, you don’t necessarily have time for hour-long bilats every 2 weeks.

But since youre doing this outside of work, feel free to discuss each section for as little or as long as you want.

So the first 10 minutes is meant for you to talk about the progress you’ve made with your goals. Try to give specific examples that display your goal in action.

For example, if your goal is “become a better athlete”, maybe an instance where you’ve displayed that goal in action is doing training and conditioning twice a week, or staying late after practice to work on a particular skill. Or let’s say your goal is to improve public speaking. Maybe an instance you displayed that was mingling at an event, or by speaking slower to reduce stuttering.

You are going to fill out this information on the template before your meeting. You can even send it to your friend or mentor in advance so they can prepare for the meeting.

10-10

The second 10 is meant for your friend or mentor to respond to your goals and examples you gave in the first 10.

Do they agree with the examples you’ve given?
Is there anything they don’t see you doing?
Is there anything they think you should be doing differently?

I want to note here that this exercise obviously involves constructive criticism, so (1) you need to be prepared to be constructively criticized and not get defensive, (2) you have to be open to different opinions and integrating new changes into your day, and (3) the friend or mentor you choose to speak to should know the difference between criticism and constructive criticism when they critique your goals and discuss your progress.

10-10-10

The third “10” is meant to be a back-and-forth dialogue.

It should be a conversation about whether you are on the right path and should flow naturally after discussing the previous two sections.

You should also discuss any events you are excited to attend in the near future, as well as any upcoming challenges that you are excited for but also might need specific advice on. Are there any other topics you’d like to discuss, do you have any questions about why your friend or mentor critiqued you in a certain why, do you see any thing holding you back from achieving your goals, and are you willing to make the changes recommended to you by your friend and mentor?
